σιγά σιγά(sigá sigá)
Slowly. Little by little. Without rushing.
I learned this word on the island of Fournoi.
Late at night, a family was gathered outside a small tavern, playing rebetiko with a bouzouki. They invited us to join them, poured us a drink, and kept singing as if time itself had decided to stay a little longer.
That’s when a friend explained the phrase σιγά σιγά.
I realized it wasn’t just about moving slowly.
It was about living without feeling chased by the next thing.
This word resonated with me because I’ve recently found myself constantly chasing the next thing to accomplish.
Taking a break for the summer wasn’t an easy decision, especially with my home renovation still ongoing. But now that I’m here, it feels completely worth it.
σιγά σιγά.
